Olympic distance runners use cooling vests to combat overheating. But precooling can also help in sport that involve sprinting.
In an Australian study, men wore vests, wrapped their necks with cold towels and iced their quads for 20 minutes before training in 32’C heat. At moderate intensity, they covered 14% more ground than those who’d only sat in the shade.
“Before your game, apply cold towels to your upper body and ice your core and quads”, says study author Dr. Rob Duffield.
