Watched a video on minimalism recently and it got me thinking how it’s so true that we fill our spaces with stuff instead of experiences and memories. Everyone in some way or the other is keeping up with the Jones and buying stuff/things they don’t even need to impress people who don’t even care.
On this video there was this one exercise. The guy takes an empty box and challenges himself to fill the box with one item a day with something he doesn’t use, need or add value to his life.
So we, the wife person and I, decide to find ourselves an empty box which we have decided to fill with an item or two on a daily basis to see what we can get rid of and declutter some of the mess we find around ourselves, which we ourselves have accumulated.
Have to admit, looking around I’m a bit of an organised hoarder. I’ve kept stuff/things for the ‘what if we need it’ factor. What if I need that or this? I will eventually wear it, I will use it for that project, I will read it later or again in the future.
We have some catching up to do, so thought we’d added two items each and have promised to continue until the end of the month.
The empty box and filling it with stuff also symbolises us getting rid of the stink and negativity that was 2020. So many bad things happened during this year. It won’t be easily forgotten but with throwing away stuff we are freeing ourselves, not to buy more stuff, but to fill that space with meaningful experiences and memories.
We will use our time and energy to fill the spaces uncovered with items that add value to our lives and there will be no empty box anymore just a box filled with stuff we no longer need.
Sure you can relate and are experiencing something similar in your life. Leave a comment, let me know how you are filling your empty box.
