The Inexplicable Caging of Pride

Learnt a new work today ‘inexplicable’ which means – can’t explain or account for, which is quite fitting as I can’t explain why I love lions so much.

Don’t think I’ll ever afford a safari and see lions in the wild, and I’m not pro caging, zoos and canning but I find zoos and sanctuaries the only places I can see these majestic creatures, and I will gladly pay the entrance fee for these places in the hope that it goes towards the well-being on the animals, even if they are in cages.

They shouldn’t be caged but there is little we can do when we only complain and protest – so I support their captivity even though writing that just sounds wrong.

Saw a pride lately, the male lion seems quite young and I won’t be surprised if the big lioness, that towers him, is actually his mom. He has a beautiful mane and walks around with some command while being surrounded by four lionesses – he is a gorgeous sight even if it’s in a cage.

I stood there and stared straight in their eyes in a hope I would see something special, really wanted to hear them roar.

But I found something unexpected. As I stared into the eyes of what seems to be the mom, I saw a wild animal tamed, all her instincts drained by a four by four wired cage.

This was an inexplicable caging of pride

As you can see when they stand together, their heads are pointed at one target, they are still very much wild, fierce and majestic.
